Coir - the wonder fibre

The delicious avial or mouthwatering fish moilee or the smooth chutney with dosa – the lavish use of coconut in the preparation of these dishes gives it a distinctive taste. A true Malayalee cannot imagine what his life would be like without coconuts. Every part of the coconut tree is put to use.

The fibre obtained from the husk (rough exterior shell) of the coconut is chiefly used to make coir. Once the fibre is harvested it goes through a process of retting where it is left to decay for a minimum of six months in huge pits along the backwaters. Once it decays, it is collected and woven into ropes on indigenous machines. These are then dried and meticulously crafted.
